Kia Vaughn, pivot di 24 anni, alta 193 cm. x 94,3 kg di peso, è l'undicesima giocatrice americana della storia del Cras Taranto. L’atleta proviene da New York, che le ha dato i natali il 24 gennaio 1987 nel quartiere del Bronx, dove ha vissuto la sua infanzia, prima di trasferirsi sulla “Quinta strada” cuore dell’isola di Manhattan, dove ha frequentato l’high school alla St Michael’s Academy. Ma è alle scuole medie che Kia inizia a prendere confidenza con la palla arancione, sotto l’influenza della madre Aja Ellington, che ha dato alla luce sette figli, dei quali lei è la maggiore. 
Il basket entra subito nel cuore della ragazza americana, tanto che i suoi canestri le diedero già la prima fama nel 2005, guadagnandosi a 18 anni il titolo di Gatorade Player of the Year dello Stato di New York. Prolifica la carriera nella Ncaa, la lega universitaria statunitense. Lei detiene il record come seconda miglior rimbalzista (1079 palle recuperate) e stoppatrice (279 volte) della storia collegiale del team dei Rutgers Scarlet Knight. E per punti e rimbalzi dei Rutgers è nel quartetto di atlete che ha sfondato il tetto del numero 1000.
Finita l’università nel 2009 la Vaughn ha superato all’ottavo posto il Draft dell’Wnba, entrando nel mondo professionistico del basket femminile attraverso la divisa dei New York Liberty. Nella sua annata da Rookie, chiude con la media di 4,8 punti e 2,6 rimbalzi. Nella terza Wnba del 2011, porta il trend di 9,2 punti e 6,5 rimbalzi. 
La Vaughn ha alle spalle anche una tappa in Europa, nella regular season della Lega israeliana, onorata nella stagione 2009-2010 con la media di 16,9 punti e 9,9 rimbalzi a partita con la maglia del Ramat Hasharon.
Imprese anche con le squadre giovanili degli Stati Uniti: medaglia d’oro al Mondiale under 21 di Mosca 2007; medaglia d’oro ai Giochi americani under 20 di Messico City 2006.
Adesso arriva a Taranto, carica di motivazione, per portare talento e peso nell’area. Qui riceve il testimone ideale di una vecchia campionessa del Cras, una certa Tari Phillips (scudetto del 2003) che, come Kia, ha vinto il titolo di Most Improved Player of the year nella Wnba, ovvero la giocatrice “migliorata” della stagione a distanza di due anni nel suo ingresso in Wnba come “matricola”. I suoi progressi, stando ai numeri del parquet, hanno spinto il 16 settembre 2011 la commissione degli addetti ai lavori dell’Wnba ad assegnarle 15 delle 40 preferenze totali.

The athlete comes from New York, who was born January 24 1987 in the Bronx, where she lived the childhood before moving on "Fifth Avenue" in Manhattan, where she attended the high school at St Michael's Academy. 
In the middle school Kia start playing baketball, under the influence of the mother Aja Ellington, who gave birth to seven children, of whom she is the greatest.

Vaughn received 15 out of 40 votes from a panel of local and national sportswriters and broadcasters. In Taranto Kia receives ideal witness by an old champion Cras, Tari Phillips (italian championship in 2003) that, as Kia, won the same Wnba award.

The Madison Square Garden, New York Liberty arena, loves the athleticism and explosiveness of Kia Vaughn. Before each game Kia loves listening to Beyoncé songs in the i-pod. She studied journalism in college and every time she can, returns to visit the places of her childhood in the Bronx, where she is welcomed as a star.
